Grooves/Techniques

After you play you prepared piece you will be asked to groove in different styles. Some of these include:
  • Jazz Walz
  • Swing
  • Samba
  • Funk
  • Rock
  • Bossa Nova
  • Afro Cuban

To best prepare for this, try and have some grooves and fills ready for each of those styles. Also, it's important to note that they will count you off. So be ready for any tempo.

Usually while playing one or more of those styles they will ask you to trade 4s or 8s while the auditioner plays piano, guitar or bass. If you dont know how to trade 4s, then i highly suggest researching it, understanding and practicing it. Trading 4s or 8s is pretty much grooving or playing for 4 bars while somebody takes a solo, then they stop and you take a fill/solo for 4 bars. You then repeat the process again. The same thing goes for trading 8s, but you solo for 8 bars instead of 4.
It is very important that you keep the 2 and 4 going on the high hats. It will help you keep time and also come back into the groove after your solo.

Good Luck!
