Tips

In this section you will find some tips, hints and suggestions for your Berklee audition written by students who have already auditioned for drums.
Hope it helps!

  • Learn to read... How can you call yourself a musician if you cant read?
  • Play a song you will very confident with
  • They will ask you to play in bossa, funk, mambo, swing, and rock. Know the styles!
  • They count you off so be ready for any tempo
  • Look sharp...
  • Stay positive. Many students here were not accepted on first audition
  • Practice the sight reading during your 15 minutes. Dont use this time to warm up. You should already be warmed up!!
  • Many people say Berklee is Jazz heavy and only jazz players will make it. That is not TRUE! However you should come in with a little jazz experience.
  • Good timing is your ticket into this wonderful school. DONT LOOSE IT!
**IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR DRUMMERS!!!**
Once you are enrolled at Berklee you will have to take some core music classes. These include Harmony, Counterpoint, etc. You will need to write music and know a little bit of theory. If you come not knowing any of this, you will spend most of your time trying to learn it, and not spend so much time on actually playing your drums. So it is very important that you learn at least some BASIC theory before attending. It will really help.
Please check out this video by a Berklee drum teacher who further explains this concept.
